The J/80 is where our small-boat program gets serious. A 1,400 lb fixed lead keel gives it a big-boat feel on a 26-foot hull, the boom is high enough to see under and safe to sit beneath, and the twelve-foot cockpit means nobody has to clamber over a cabin top.
It will do fifteen knots under spinnaker and it will also potter home under main alone. Sailing World rated it easier to handle, less intimidating and better suited to open water than the other sportboats it tested. It is our first recommendation for sailing north of the Bay Bridge.
